Many travelers choose a driver-guided rental for cross-border trips, since our driver-guides are familiar with the border process, required paperwork, and road conditions on the other side. If you're an experienced self-drive traveler, self drive is possible too — just confirm with us in advance that your chosen vehicle and route are approved for the crossing.

Best Vehicles for Cross Border Travel

For cross-border trips we generally recommend a 4x4 — a Land Cruiser Prado or full-size Land Cruiser — given the mix of paved and unpaved roads across the region. Insurance and unlimited mileage are included; fuel, park fees, and any cross-border permits are quoted separately based on your route.

How the Border Crossing Process Works

On the day of your crossing, you'll clear Uganda immigration and customs, drive across, then clear immigration and customs on the other side. Your vehicle documents (comesa insurance / cross-border permit) need to be in order before you arrive at the border — this is exactly why we ask for advance notice, so everything is prepared and the crossing itself is quick.

Documents You'll Need at the Border

• Your passport, valid for the duration of your trip.
• Any visa required for the country you're entering — check requirements for your nationality before you travel.
• Your driving license and IDP, plus the vehicle's cross-border documents that we prepare for you.
• Proof of any required vaccinations (such as yellow fever) if applicable to your route — check current requirements for each country.

How Long Does a Crossing Take?

Border crossing times vary by location, day of week, and how busy the post is, but with your paperwork prepared in advance, most crossings take somewhere between 30 minutes and a couple of hours. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends and holidays.

How much advance notice do you need for a cross-border trip?
At least one to two weeks is ideal, so we can prepare the correct vehicle documents and confirm a vehicle approved for the crossing. Shorter notice may be possible depending on the route — just ask.

Is cross-border car rental more expensive than a regular rental?
There's typically an additional cost for the cross-border permit and insurance, on top of your normal rental rate. We'll quote this clearly upfront once we know your route.
